The Animal-Free Shopper (£4.99 for 7th edition published Oct 2005), published by the Vegan Society lists loads of animal-friendly products, including big brand names and supermarkets own label brands. It also lists products which are free from Genetically Modified ingredients. See merchandise

Vegetarian Shops

Puja Sweet Mart, 57 St Mary's Road, Southampton. 023 8023 3677. They sells both Indian sweets and savouries, e.g. pakoras, samosas, onion bhajis. Most of the savouries and a few of the sweets are vegan. It's owned by Jagdish and Kashmira Chavda who are both vegetarian. One of our members told us "it's fantastic, and very low priced too!" They also cater for Weddings and Parties. Opening hours: Mon: Closed. Tues-Fri: 11:30 a.m. - 7 p.m. Sat: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sun: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. They have recently increased their range of vegan goodies and have introduced some gluten-free goodies too.

Veggie Wholefood Co-ops

There are a few veggie Co-ops in the Solent area, which buy food from major wholefood distributors. You pay about 25% to 30% less because you are buying from the supplier. They sell organic food as well as conventionally-produced food. There is only a very low mark up to cover administration expenses - any small profits go to a good cause. You can bulk buy all sorts of yummy items. (e.g. 1 kg of nuts or 12 one litre cartons of soya milk) for even lower prices. You can even buy 25kg sacks of some items and split them with friends if you want to save even further! Co-ops have a much wider range than 'conventional' healthfood shops. However, you should keep in mind that: Co-ops only order every month or so; they don't keep any stock; you must get the order in on time and pay in advance; buyer collects - co-ops are run from a private house and the organiser cannot deliver. They are a neighbourhood co-op aiming to provide literature and information that would not otherwise be available. They now sell 'conventional' books, but have retained their commitment to stocking alternative and challenging publications, at the same if not greater volumes, or under new or condensed categories. They have a wide range (over 100) of journals and magazines (including The Vegan and Vegan Views magazines), animal rights and environmental literature. They also stock a large range of Fair Trade/Traid Craft goodies from biscuits to bogrolls, all suitable for vegetarians and a good portion suitable for vegans! We particularly like their range of 'seditious' postcards and badges! There is a large community notice board, so please send them materials to put on it. Posters/leaflets for events must mention whether the venue is wheelchair accessible. For those who have shopped till they drop, there is a comfy sofa at the front of the shop, which is conveniently located next to a frequently served bus stop. Open from 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. Monday till Saturday. They are also happy to supply book stalls to large or specialised events, or book boxes for smaller events.

They also sell garden products... organic seeds from Suffolk herbs, baby vegetable plants (eg tomatoes and lettuces), bird/animal friendly boxes and fat feeders (made from vegetable fat), organic compost, books on gardening, and information on permaculture.
