Local Animal Welfare/Rights Groups

SVV don't go on demos, but if you want to, there are lots of other groups in our area that do. These groups are opposed to factory farming, medical/scientific/cosmetics testing on animals, circuses, hunting, angling, etc. They often go on demos, and can usually give people lifts. Most of their members are veggie or vegan, and they welcome new people. For groups outside the Solent area, have a look at the Animal Contacts Directory

Southampton Animal Concern Pauline Dibley, 190 Barnes Lane, Sarisbury, Hampshire SO31 7BJ. 01489 584035. They meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Friends' Meeting House, Ordnance Road, Southampton at 7.30 p.m. They have a stall in Southampton at Above Bar Street every month or so on Saturdays from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Winchester Animal Concern Marjorie Pooley, 6 South Street, Ropley, Hants, SO24 0DY. 01962 773673. They meet on the last Thursday of the month at the Friends' Meeting House, Colebrook Street, Winchester at 7.30 p.m. They have a stall in Winchester High Street at the Buttercross every month or so on Saturdays from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gosport and Fareham Animal Rights Helen Nelson, 26 Brune Lane, Rowner, Gosport, PO13 9RA. 023 9258 8516. They have joint meetings with Portsmouth Animal Rights, at the Oyster House, 291 Locksway Rd, Portsmouth on the last Tuesday of the month at 8 p.m. They have street stalls jointly with Portsmouth Animal Rights in Portsmouth, Fareham and Gosport.

Friends of the Animals at Porton Down Jennifer Pothecary. 01980 629692. Porton Down is roughly 5 miles to the north of Salisbury, and is where they do military testing on animals, including chemical & biological warfare tests. Jennifer Pothecary organises peaceful and friendly marches (no shouting and abuse) through Salisbury and holds vigils at Porton Down itself.
